The Staffordshire Cafe's Worth Knowing About

We have to be honest: over the years, we've become quite the regulars at that chain coffee shop. We'd go there for a catch-up with friends, a place to work from home, or a quick iced latte through the drive-thru as a pick-me-up on a dreary Monday morning.

But since starting TSC (The Staffordshire Collective), we couldn't help but realise we could — and probably should — do better. So, we made it our mission to swap the familiar for the local, heading out to independent cafés across Staffordshire to get our coffee fix.

And luckily for us, Staffordshire has quite the coffee scene.

So, rather than declaring one best coffee shop — because frankly, it depends on the mood — these are the local spots worth knowing about, saving and adding to your next coffee run.

For the pastry girl

Live Love Loaf, Leek

is the kind of bakery that makes walking past the counter genuinely difficult. Expect freshly baked sourdough, pastries, doughnuts and cakes, alongside seriously good coffee. It's independent, beautifully simple and very much worth a detour when you're craving a coffee-and-pastry situation.

French & Byrne, Stafford

is another one for your pastry-and-coffee fix. Their homemade pastries and cakes sit alongside a menu of breakfast, brunch and lunch, making it an easy spot to pop in for something sweet or settle down for a little longer. Basically, come for the coffee, stay because you've spotted the pastry counter.

For working remotely

Thyme Kitchen, Lichfield

Their Thyme Work Pass starts from around £15–£18 for the day, giving you a dedicated place to work alongside unlimited hot drinks and discounts on food. Essentially, it's everything you need to turn I'll just answer a few emails into a full change-of-scenery workday — without having to work from your kitchen table.

BEAR, Stone

With Wi-Fi, plenty of space and a menu that covers everything from speciality coffee to brunch, it's an easy place to settle in with your laptop for a few hours. And when you inevitably need a break from the screen, there's always the option of ordering something good to eat.

The brand began in Uttoxeter and has grown into something of a local coffee institution, with its Stone café sitting neatly on the High Street.

Kiln at Number 12, Longton

A slightly more creative take on the WFH escape. It's a café, creative space and pottery studio all rolled into one, so you can work for a few hours before swapping your laptop for something a little more hands-on. The kind of place that makes a Tuesday afternoon feel considerably less like a Tuesday afternoon.

For when you want to make an afternoon out of it

Poms Kitchen at Barton Marina

Start with coffee and something sweet, then take your time wandering around Barton Marina, popping into the independent shops and galleries or heading for a walk around the water. It's the kind of plan that starts with “fancy a coffee?” and somehow turns into an entire afternoon out.

The Pear Tree Crêperie at Heart of the Country Village

The menu is predominantly crêpes — and, frankly, they're bloody delicious. Whether you're in the mood for something sweet or savoury, it's the sort of place where “let's just grab lunch” can very easily become the main event.

Make a proper afternoon of it by starting with a crêpe and coffee at The Pear Tree Crêperie, then taking a wander around Heart of the Country Village. Browse the independent shops, have a little mooch, pick up something you definitely didn't need and generally embrace the art of having nowhere else to be.

Whites Coffee Bar, Oakedge Park

is another one worth knowing about. Tucked away in the Staffordshire countryside near Wolseley Bridge, this independent family-run coffee shop serves speciality coffee, homemade cakes, brunch and lunch. Come for the coffee, stay for the countryside setting — and perhaps a little wander afterwards.

For the coffee on the go girl

Brew, Tamworth

is one of the newer names on the Staffordshire coffee scene, opening just seven months ago and already making enough of an impression that a second location is reportedly in the works. Not bad for a newcomer.

Alongside the coffee, you'll find matcha and açai bowls, making it an easy stop whether you're after your morning caffeine fix or something a little more substantial. 📍Market St, Tamworth B79 7FJ

Fika, Cannock

is another one to have on your radar. There's seating if you've got time to stay, plus a food menu if a coffee alone isn't going to cut it. But thanks to its central Cannock location, it's also a great little stop when you're already in town and simply need a quick caffeine fix. Grab your coffee, grab your matcha and get back to your day.

For a cafe in Staffordshire in a unique location

Chapel Coffee, Cannock

is about as far from your standard high-street coffee shop as you can get. Set inside a converted former church, the space has plenty of character, with speciality coffee, brunch and cakes on the menu. It's the kind of setting that makes a coffee feel a little more like an occasion.

So, consider this your sign to skip the chain next time you fancy a coffee. Whether you're after a takeaway iced latte, somewhere to settle in with your laptop, a pastry worth leaving the house for or simply an excuse to make a Saturday afternoon out of it, there's a cafe in Staffordshire for it.
